Are All Cosmetics Safe?
Questions about the safety in cosmetics have arisen in recent years, causing the FDA to take notice. The FDA is the only one who has power over the cosmetics industry, but it seems that they are “still thinking about what it will ultimately do”, reports Eric Greenberg in Packaging World Magazine. “Cosmetic companies and consumers alike are finding themselves in the eye of a safety storm as a closer look is cast on the safety of cosmetic ingredient.”
The regulations for a new cosmetics line to come about is that is certifies that the products are safe for the consumer as long as it is used as directed. This is a very loose regulation that can end up with adverse side effects for many. Meetings have been arranged to create cooperation on cosmetic regulation throughout all channels – to tackle the safety issue regarding the cosmetic industry.
The Environmental Working Group has accused the FDA of not providing protection to the public from the ingredients that are damaging, “safety should be a bigger issue than working on international harmonization.” EWG has shown that many harmful ingredients in some cosmetics sold in America are harmful.
