Eyeliner: Liquid, Powder, Wax, or Kohl
Since the time of the Ancient Egyptians women have used eyeliner to enhance and define the eyes. In addition to defining the eyes, the Ancient Egyptians also believed it would protect them from the evil eye. It was a black ointment made from a type of sulfide. It has also been used in the middle east, India, and Africa to name just a few places where eyeliner was quite popular.
Today, there are many different types of eyeliner, so which one is the best? It might be tough to make a decision staring at the shelf with the dozens of many different eyeliners, in colors that would make a rainbow jealous. So what is the difference in each of those eyeliners?
Let's start with liquid eyeliner. Liquid eyeliner creates the darkest lines. It is most commonly used on the upper lid only. This one, however can be one of the most difficult to apply. If you do not have a very steady hand, it can be noticeably rippled. If you are just trying your hand at applying eyeliner, while this may give a bold effect, it might be better to start off with another type of eyeliner.
Next, let's talk about a powder-based pencil eyeliner. While they are not as bold as liquid, they have a beautifully defined look. This type is much easier to apply and is probably the best one to start out on. Generally these are in darker shades with a matte finish.
Next, let's explore wax-based pencil eyeliners. These are softer then the powder-based eyeliners. The wax makes it easier to apply. These are a little harder to apply then the powder-based pencils, but easier then the liquid eyeliners. Wax-based eyeliners are more likely to smudge and can be smudged purposely to create a smoky look. If you don't like the pencils, they also come in cones or compacts with applicators.
Kohl eyeliners are made from soot and other ingredients. It is the oldest type of eyeliner of the ones listed here. It was used as far back as 3500 B.C. This was not worn for aesthetic beauty however. This was more of a superstition and medical reasons. It was believed that Kohl could protect against eye ailments, the evil eye, and the glaring sun. It is usually seen in black but it can also come in other dark colors. This is the only eyeliner that can be applied behind the eyelids. Be cautious about these though. The FDA has warned that Kohl based make up that is imported may be hazardous to your health as they may contain high levels of lead.
Even though there are many types of eyeliner, they are all designed to enhance the beauty of the eye and the wearer. With liquid, powder-based, wax-based and Kohl eyeliners, there is never a shortage of choices and new looks to choose from.
