Make-up For Aging Skin
As we age, the same make-up that made us look fresh and lively can suddenly make us look older than we really are. If you are transitioning from your thirties to your forties, it's time to take a look at your make-up routine and clear out anything that can settle into fine lines and age your face.
When shopping for a foundation, look for formulas that are moisturizing and that have optical diffusers to draw attention away from fine lines and wrinkles. Foundation that is water-based leaves aging skin with a moist, dewy finish that gives your skin a more youthful look. A good serum or foundation primer can fill in fine lines before you apply your foundation.
When your foundation is applied, stay away from pressed powders, which can settle in wrinkles and fine lines, making them look deeper. Use loose power to set your foundation instead. Loose powder should be applied with a large, high quality brush in a light layer. Powder should just “set” your foundation. Do not try and get any extra coverage from powder. It will cake on your face and make you look much older than you really are.
When making up your lips, use a powder color and a brush to line your lips. A pencil creates a hard line that can creep into fine lines around the lip. This isn't a good look for anyone! Cover the lips with a light, shimmery gloss or a matte lipstick. A plumping lip gloss can give your lips a fuller, younger appearance. Plumping lip glosses can be found in drugstores and department stores everywhere. Prices range from $5 up to $30, depending on the brand. Most plumping lip glosses use some form of mild skin irritant like chili or cinnamon oil.
For eye make-up, stick with neutrals or subtle colors. Mix and match textures to give your eyes more pop. It is a myth that older women should steer clear of frosted shadow. Frosted shadow is fine, but pair it with neutral, understated make-up on the rest of your face. Don't neglect your eyebrows when making up your eyes. Apply light brow color, but don't over pluck or use a harsh pencil. Harsh eyebrows are instantly aging.
