Skin Cancer Treatments
A Little About Skin Cancer
Skin which is the largest organ of the body protects against sunlight, heat, injury and infection. The skin also helps in controlling body temperature and stores fat, water and Vitamin D. As the skin is made of two main layers called the epidermis and dermis the upper and lower layer respectively, skin cancer begins with the upper layer. Skin cancer can start from anywhere on the body but it most commonly starts from the skin that is most exposed to the sunlight like the arms, face and neck. There are different types of skin cancers and among them Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Basal Cell Carcinoma are the common ones that are together called as Nenmelanoma Skin Cancers. Actinic Keratosis is also a skin condition that usually develops from the upper layer of the skin.
As skin cancer treatments state, the Nenmelanoma skin cancers generally don’t spread to the other parts of the body Melanoma skin cancer which is the rarest cancer may invade nearby cells and spread to other parts of the body. In most of the cases the exposure to sunlight and skin colour may raise the risk factor of getting Nenelamona skin cancer. You can detect a skin cancer if there are bumps or spots on the skin that look abnormal in size, colour and texture. The main factor that can affect the chance of recovery and treatment options is mostly the stage of cancer. A skin cancer treatment mostly depends on the stage of cancer, the type of cancer, the general health of patient and the size and location of the cancer.
Treatment Options for Skin Cancer
There are various types of treatment options for patients suffering from nonmelanona skin cancer and actinic Keratosis skin conditions. A few treatments are standard which are currently treated and other cancers are tested in a clinical lab. There are also clinical trials which the patient can go through for an improved treatment and to obtain information on new treatment options for cancer. A clinical trial also shows that a new treatment option is better than a standard cancer treatment. There are four main types of standard treatments used for cancer which are Surgery, Radiation therapy, Chemotherapy and Photodynamic therapy.
Skin Cancer Surgery
In the Mohs Micrographic Surgery the cancer affected cells are cut from the skin and are checked under a microscope for cancer cells. The process of removing layers continues until cancer cells are seen. In this surgery minimal amount of tissues are removed which often removes the skin cancer from the body. In the radiation therapy treatment, high energy x-rays or a radiation is used to kill the cancer cells or prevent them from growing. According to the Chemotherapy cancer treatment, it uses drugs to kill the cancer cells or stop them from dividing. When chemotherapy treatment is taken in the body the radiation which enters the bloodstream reache the cancer cells throughout the body and destroys them. The Photodynamic therapy or PDT is also a cancer treatment which uses drug and a special laser light to destroy the cancer cells. There are also new types of cancer treatments that are being tested and among them is the Biologic therapy. In this type of treatment the immune system of the patient is used to fight the skin cancer.
